The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will soon hand out 1 800 bursaries to give the region's young people a boost.

"Education is a provincial government competency, and is sadly failing many of our young South Africans," described Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Athol Trollip.

"The Mandela Bay Municipality acknowledges that our mandate excludes education, however the City has nonetheless identified R34 million for bursaries.

"Because our young learners deserve an opportunity to fulfill their dreams and the Nelson Mandela Bay Government wants to see this happen."

The Mayor said that the Metro will continue to put pressure on the provincial and national departments of education to improve school conditions, facilities and educator skills.

"In the meanwhile, your coalition Metro government has stepped up to nurture the dreams and aspirations of our next generation of Leaders.

"Details on how to apply for these bursaries will be communicated in due course," he added.
