Mhlontlo Local Municipality Mayor condemns mob justice in Qumbu

Port Elizabeth - The Mayor of Mhlontlo Local Municipality, Nompumelelo Dywili, has expressed her concern at the acts of vigilantism and the killing of four young men by the members of the Community of Mbentsa location in Qumbu last week Wednesday.

"The mayor visited the families of the victims on 22 May to console the mourners and give words of hope from government.

"Two of these young men are from a village called eLuxeni, one from eSiqikini Ward 23 and the other one from Machibini village in Ward 22," the Mhlontlo Local Municipality said.

"These barbaric and shameful acts of vigilantism have no place in the society we are trying to build.

"Two of these young men were doing Grade 12 and their families were already counting down to the Matric exams. It is heartbreaking to see such dreams get shattered like that.

"Even the other two were doing well at school and the community had a hope of blossoming future."

The Mhlontlo Local Municipality said that it is working very hard to promote tourism and investment so that economy of the area grows and have our people employed.

"Things like these negate our strides of promoting our good name and disposition," it added.

"We wish to state it categorically clear that this is an isolated incident which has no place in our society and we condemn it with contempt it deserves.

"We will continue to make sure that all Mhlontlo towns are safe and a place to visit. We also wish to guarantee the tourists that all our tourist attractions are safe and a must-visit after lockdown.

"We are pleased with the swift performance of the SAPS under leadership of Colonel Feke the Station Commander of Qumbu for arresting the suspects same day."

The suspects will be appearing in Qumbu Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
