Missed opportunities cost Chippa United victory against Bloem Celtic

Chippa United endured their third successive ABSA Premiership draw in the space of a week, when they locked to a goalless draw against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday.

In the beginning stages of the game, the Chilli Boys dominated possession, but it was to no avail, as poor execution and missed chances cost the home side.

A golden opportunity went astray in the 28th minute, when Kurt Lentjies crossed a pin-point pass to Mpho Mvelase, who was scattering in the box, but a long-awaited kick from the receiver, expended the goal for Chippa.

As the first half grew on, the Chilli Boys continued to exercise dominance, and in the 39th minute, they had a sniff, when an exceptional crosser once again by Lentjies found Moeketsi Sekola’s head; only to be deflected off the cross bar for a close missed chance.

Momentum seemed to swing to Bloemfontein Celtic’s favour in the second half with the visitors enjoying more possession, but another blown chance went wayward in the 60th minute by the home side, when a free kick from sharp shooter Lentjies this time-round found James Okwuosa's head in the box, but the header went wide of the target.

Just three minutes later, the roles were reversed, when Okwuosa’ cross to Lentjies, saw his deflecting kick go wide across the face of the goals – costing yet another opportunity.

In the 87th minute, a shot-at-goal from Lerato Manzini from outside the box missed the target by a whisker, when the kick connected the upright.

Celtic managed to cling to a fortunate 0-0 draw under the circumstances, in what was Chippa’s third tie under Teboho Moloi, since taking over the coaching reins from Dan Malesela almost two weeks ago.

Chippa keeper, Daniel Akpeyi, also made some decisive yet simple saves in that second half against Celtic – and as a result of his fine barricades in recent matches, only slipping past one goal in three matches, has been named in the Nigerian national side for their World Cup qualifier against Zambia this weekend.
