MKIGMA Gospel Awards ready to air in August

After a long time pleading and begging for recognition, Gospel artists in the South African region will have a chance to get some recognition after organisers finally decided to host an awards ceremony in the Nelson Mandela Bay.

The Mpumakoloni International Gospel Music Awards (MKIGMA) has opened voting for the ceremony that will happen in August and members of of the public are encouraged to vote.

There are nine nominee categories, which include four Namibian and South African artists.

The MKIGMA apparently started in 2015 when the founders bounced back and forth pleading for sponsorship, but through God’s grace, in 2018 it finally became possible.

According to Thembinkosi Skosana, MKIGMA Media Liaison Officer, the entry requirements for all the artists were simple as they entailed contestants having recorded projects, a biography and filling out an entry form.

Unfortunately, artists from the Nelson Mandela Bay did not apply to be part of the awards, therefore none of them are on the list of nominees.

But not to worry because Metro Gospel awards, which only focus on NMB artists that were launched last year by Khumbulani Qekema will hit a second run in October this year.

Some artists claimed that the MKIGMA was in a rivalry with the Metro Gospel Awards, which was refuted by Skosana.

“When I check at the Metro Gospel Awards, I’d say that we are different from them because they are only based locally while MKIGMA awards are internationally-based," he said.

“We are not in competition with the Metro Gospel Award, MKIGMA was planned since 2015."

Skosana said that the MKIGMA has four international artists from Namibia; they had wanted to bring more, but the budget couldn’t allow them to do so.

He said that the four volunteered to pay for their own transport costs while the MKIGMA will pay for their accommodation.

Voting lines are already open and anyone, who wants to vote can just SMS the category and the name of the person they are voting for to 45677.

The awards are expected to commence on the 4th of August 2018 at the Furthermarket Hall in Port Elizabeth starting at 05H00.

Tickets start at R250 for two people.
