Mob kills Mt Ayliff man, burns down his home over alleged stolen sheep

Mt Ayliff - Police in Mt Ayliff are investigating a murder, assault, arson and malicious damage to property case, which occurred in Tela A/A Manxontseni Location, in Mt Ayliff on Sunday.

The incident ocurred at about 10:20.

"It is alleged that on Sunday, a group of people from Manxontseni Location searched a local homestead, and upon finding the meat of a slaughtered sheep and a skin of the sheep, rounded up those staying at the homestead," said police spokesperson, Capt Raphael Motloung.

"During the interrogation by the community members, the suspects (deceased and a survivor) admited to have stolen the sheep. And they promised to pay for the sheep.

"However, they were assualted by a mob allegedly accusing them of stock theft. The mob set alight a roundervel (hut) and it was burnt to ashes and the other room was badly damged by the mob."

Capt Motloung said that police were summoned to the scene.

"The community members were asked to hand over the suspects, but they flatly refused to do so, and the police, were forced to take the suspects from the community by force," he added.

"The alleged stock thieves were taken to Mt Ayliff Hospital where one victim - a 27-year-old, died and the other is in crticial condition at the hospital."

Capt Motloung said that a 70-year-old male and a 60-year-old woman as well as their four grandchildren, who lived in the burnt house were taken to place of safety, at social development centre.

"Distatster management members were informed of the incident so that they can assist the family."
