Momentum One Day Cup: Warriors enacted first victory against Knights

The Warriors managed their first Momentum One-Day Cup victory of the season when they beat the Knights by 64 runs at the Diamond Oval, Kimberley, over the weekend; in a significantly low-scoring affair.

The Warriors’ victory came primarily at the hand of captain, JJ Smuts, in his stern all-round contribution in the match’s onset.

Both sides, unable to score more than 200 runs in their respective innings and both achieving a run-rate of less than 4.00, the Warriors were set to bat first, as they projected a seemingly gettable 185 all out after 47.5 overs.

Smuts top-scored for his side with 33 runs, with four other Warriors batters contributing more than 20 each, in the form of Yaseen Vallie (27), Andrew Birch (24), Sisanda Magala (23) and Lesiba Ngoepe (23).

The loss of wickets came at no sudden crunch, but rather in clusters throughout a consistent tandem with the lot of overs – but in inconsistent batting.

In the space of 2.2 overs, the Warriors lost their 2nd and 3rd wickets respectively; they lost their 5th and 6th in the space of one over; and they lost their last three wickets in the space of just nine balls (1.3 overs).

The Knights’ Dillon Du Preez and Shadley van Schalkwyk each took three wickets apiece with bowling figures of 3/18 and 3/37 respectively.

Smuts on the other end, starred with the ball, achieving astonishing bowling figures of 4/4 – which assisted in cutting the Knights short for a meek total of 121 all out off just 35.3 overs.

The only scorer for the Knights was Pite van Biljon, scoring 43 – the highest of the day, but backed up dismally by his teammates, as no other player in the order scored more than 20.

The Warriors, with one win out of three, are now placed second-last (fifth) on the Momentum One-Day Cup Log and play the Lions at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday in their next encounter.
