Motherwell Tactical Response Team nabs two after bakkie hijacked

The Motherwell Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Port Elizabeth, recovered a hijacked Toyota Hilux bakkie and arrested two suspects on Friday.

The bakkie was apparently hijacked behind Shoprite in Daku Road, Kwazakele, Port Elizabeth, at 09:30.

According to the police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, the owner was about to do a pick up stock at the retailer's loading area when he was approached by two suspects armed with a firearm.

"They demanded his vehicle keys and drove off with it," Capt Beetge said.

"About 30 minutes later, Motherwell TRT members spotted the vehicle in Mbilana Street, Kwazakele."

He said that the police saw three suspects in the vehicle, but they ran away after seeing the police approaching the car.

However, the TRT members managed to arrest one of them, a 29-year-old man, while the other two men managed to evade arrest.

Captain Beetge said that further investigation was made and found the canopy of the vehicle in a yard of the house where the bakkie was parked in front of.

"The 50-year-old home owner was also arrested on a charge of possession of stolen goods."

Both suspects will appear before the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Monday on their respective charges for vehicle hijacking and possession of stolen property.

The swift actions of SAPS was applauded by Motherwell SAPS Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, who added that; "we (SAPS) have deployed extra police members in our cluster area and will continue to focus on high crime areas for the remainder of the festive season and during #SafetyFriday periods."
