Mountain breakaway: Enjoy stunning views and tranquillity at Zuurberg Mountain Village

Perched on the top of the Zuurberg Mountains, just north of Addo, is the historic Zuurberg Mountain Village. There are few places in the Eastern Cape that can match this wonderful hotel for ambience, scenery and crisp, fresh mountain air.

My girlfriend and I had been dating for two wonderful years and, on a recent weekend, I decided to spoil her with a stay at Zuurberg.

We set off on the Saturday morning with high expectations. The last 16km of the journey is particularly spectacular as the dirt road winds between citrus orchards and the Addo Elephant National Park before the twisty climb to the top of the Zuurberg Mountain pass.

The wisteria covered veranda, beautiful setting and roaring fire in the reception hall were just the kind of welcome we were hoping for. After checking in, we were taken on a short tour of the premises. This 150-year-old, 4-Star hotel has breath-taking views that stretch across the Addo Elephant National Park all the way to Port Elizabeth.

The grounds are ample with huge expanses of lawn and a variety of amenities including a tennis court, swimming pool, a playground area and a spa. Hiking, horse rides, mountain bike trails and game drives are all available in the vicinity.

Dinner consisted of a full five-course meal - buffet-style. Soup, fish, chicken and a delicious selection of red meats, salads and vegetables had our mouth’s watering. The dessert table – what a wonderful selection of treats.

After dinner, we retired to the lounge where we relaxed in front of the crackling fire and enjoyed our complimentary sherry and coffee.

Our room was in the Zuurberg Manor, which is part of the original hotel building. The Manor consists of nine lavish suites; each beautifully-appointed with a full en-suite bathroom, mini-bar and private patio.

The following morning, we awoke to the birds singing, a beautiful view and the monkeys playing in the garden. Breakfast was just as lavish as dinner and we took full advantage to ensure that we had energy for our busy day of exploring the region.

If you’re looking for a great weekend getaway, in summer or winter, the Zuurberg Mountain Village must be near the top of your list of destinations. I can’t wait to return because this wonderful hotel had exceeded my high expectations.
