Mthatha High Court jails man for 20 years killing learners en-route to studies

The Mthatha High Court sentenced a 25-year-old man, Andisile Centane, to undergo 20 years imprisonment for the murders of two school girls.

"The accused was sentenced on Friday at the Mthatha High Court," said police spokesperson, Capt Jackson Manatha.

"It is alleged that the accused murdered the two learners from Cunningham Senior Secondary School, Toleni Village, Butterworth, in a forest at Toleni Village.

"On both incidents, the victims  were going to school for Saturday classes."

Captain Manatha said that Centane murdered 16-year-old Sphosethu Waphi on 28 May 2016 at about 10:00.

A year later, he killed 20-year-old Nandipha Mtuzula on 13 May 2017, at about 10:00.

Mthatha High Court acquitted Centane on rape charges

Centane was arrested for rape and murder, but the court acquitted him on the rape charges. It convicted him on the murder charges.

Butterworth SAPS Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ngangema Xakavu, condemns the killings of women and children and has welcomed the hefty sentence imposed to the accused.

He is hoping this will send a strong message to all those, who are involved in criminal activities that they will face a full might of the law.
