Mugg & Bean Walmer Park employee convicted of faking armed robbery

A Mugg & Bean Walmer Park employee, Nomathamsanqa Beya, aged 25 years-old, and a friend, Bongani Mvunyiswa, aged 30 years-old, escaped jail after they were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and other charges in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday.

According to Port Elizabeth police, on the 3rd of November, Beya alleged that while she was on her way to deposit money belonging to the restaurant, she was robbed by a man, who threatened her with a firearm.

“The bank is situated in the same complex and video footage revealed that there was no sign of a firearm been used to threaten Beya,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She added that further investigations later established that Beya and a friend had faked the robbery.

On the 15th of November, Beya, her boyfriend, Mncedi Klaas, aged 31 years old, and Mvunyiswa were arrested.

“Beya was charged for robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, perjury and defeating the ends of justice while Mvunyiswa and Klaas were charged for conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery,” said Colonel Naidu.

On Friday, Beya and Mvunyiswa were found guilty and received a suspended sentence.

The charges against Klaas were withdrawn.
