The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Sarah Baartman District says it has received with shock and deep sadness, news of the brutal murder of its branch leader and taxi operator in Jeffreys Bay, Mthobeli Matyumza, and one of his drivers, on Sunday afternoon. The motive of the killing is not yet known.

"Two armed men (the number varies between two and three) are said to have stormed the Matyumza home and, without uttering a word, started firing shots at the helpless leader and his driver, killing them both on the scene," said SACP Sarah Baartman District Secretary, Thabiso Klaas.

"Cde Matyumza is a long-serving member of the party in the Kouga Sub-District, who has contributed immensely in the life of the organisation and the structures of the movement, both politically and materially.

"He was a well-known anti-apartheid activist who was part of the HAYCO and later became part of SAYCO from the 1980s, constantly having to leave home in order to evade arrest or dodging bullets when hit squads visited his hometown of Hankey."

Klass said that Matyumza took prominent roles as a leader in the civic movement in the new era, while taking different leadership roles within the Party.

"At the time of his death, he was the Chairperson of the Ward 14 Branch of the SACP and a Branch Treasurer of the ANC in the Kouga Sub Region," he described.

"Our sincere condolences go out to his family, comrades and friends; and the family of the driver whose name we cannot release at this stage until all his family have been informed."

Klaas said that the SACP was calling on the SAPS to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the murderers are brought to book and call on the community to bring forward any information that may help with the investigation.

Police in Jeffreys Bay on Monday appealed for information from the public that might assist them in solving the murders.
