Nearly 2 000 Bay residents to receive title deeds to their homes

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will soon hand  over nearly 2 000 title deeds to local residents says Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip.

"1940 title deeds have been approved for handover, for which some residents have been waiting over eight years. We will imminently announce dates for the handover events," he described.

"Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Nqaba Bhanga, and his team of officials have been working on cleaning up the housing list and ensuring all homeowners are in possession of a title deed. This is progress."

Trollip said that a title deed provides legal ownership of a home, an asset which can turn the tide on poverty for our most vulnerable residents.

"Owning a home is the first step.

"For a Directorate that did not hand out a single title deed between 2013 and 2015 under the previous government, the recent progress is noteworthy," he added.

"This new government appreciates the important role that home ownership plays in redress. Thus, we have embarked on an operation to clean up the housing list and ensure all rightful home owners are in possession of a title deed.

"Under this new government, ownership will become a reality to more and more people."
