Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality meets Motherwell residents over land issues

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Nqaba Bhanga on Wednesday met with the community of Motherwell to discuss issues relating to land invasion, land availability and municipal land planning for the development of Motherwell.

In the meeting, held at the Raymond Mhlaba Multi Purpose Centre, community members shared with Councillor Bhanga their plight of lack of housing and land to build their own houses.

Councillor Bhanga shared with the community information in relation to the new housing waiting list that is being done by Human Settlements.

"The issue of land and housing waiting list has been a problem for some time, this government is working around the clock to normalise the situation," said Councillor Bhanga.

"We have to make sure that only those who qualify get the houses, our priorities must also be clear.

"Physically challenged, elderly people, child headed households and single mothers must be a priority. We need to move with speed so that we can reduce the 80 000 backlog we currently have."

He also emphasised that illegal invasion of land was a delaying factor when it comes to housing delivery.
