Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality speaker launches back to school campaign

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality councilSpeaker, Buyelwa Mafaya, is expected on Wednesday to lead the municipality's take a girl child to school campaign.

"A  lack of financial resources to purchase personal items like underwear and toiletries can negatively affect and erode the confidence of learners, especially girls," said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Communications and Media Management Officer, Mthubanzi Mniki.

"Recognising this, the office of the Speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has decided to focus on an outreach programme addressing these needs."

He said that Mafaya will be visiting the Ikwezilomso High School in Zwide (Ward 25), Port Elizabeth, to officially launch a programme to hand over these much-needed items to learners from more than 10 local schools.

"The schools that will be assisted, are located in Wards 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 33 and 36," Mniki described.

"At the launch, the Speaker will address and motivate the learners and hand over sanitary towels and other personal needs.

"In this and in the other similar programmes that will be rolled out at local schools, the Speaker will partner with community volunteers and the private sector."
