Nelson Mandela University and ECDC formalize partnership to help grow province

The Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) on Tuesday officially signed a three-year partnership agreement aimed at revitalising and stimulating the provincial economy in line with Operation Phakisa objectives.

The agreement was signed between outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof Derick Swartz, representing the NMU, and the CEO of the ECDC, Ndzondelelo Dlulame, at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth.

According to the agreement, the institution will be acting mainly as the knowledge hub for the oceans economy projects, while the ECDC will assist with the localisation of the project with respect to procurement and other related support services.

The intention of the MOU is to formalize the co-operation between the University and ECDC and to provide a broad framework in which both parties will identify and pursue areas of opportunity, strategic collaboration and cooperation.

In his keynote address, Prof Swartz highlighted that skills and knowledge development is the focus area of the university.

He added that 27 000 students will be trained through the programme, which will lead to the development of the Eastern Cape.

“We want very much to uplift the communities of the Eastern Cape since the province has developmental challenges. We want to improve the quality of education, health care, social services and to grow our GDP in the province, while doing so create job opportunities - breaking the back of unemployment and poverty in our province - that is our mission,” Swartz said.

According to Prof Swartz, the NMU and the ECDC came to an agreement after realising that they have similar goals – that is to develop the province.

“We share the same goals as the ECDC, are also precisely focussed on how to release the productive capability for our citizens,” he added.

The ECDC’s Dlulame said that they were looking forward to making the partnership work.
