NERSA public hearing on proposed Eskom tariff hikes happening in Port Elizabeth

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA)'s public hearings on Eskom’s Third Multi-Year Price Determination (MYPD3) Regulatory Clearing Account (RCA) Year 5 (2017/18) application and MYPD4 revenue application are currently taking place at the Dolphin’s Leap Centre, in Humewood, Port Elizabeth.

"NERSA is conducting public hearings on Eskom’s MYPD3 RCA Year 5 (2017/18) application and MYPD4 revenue application for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years," it said.

"The public hearings started on 14 January 2019 in the Western Cape and will end on 4 February 2019 in Gauteng."

In Cape Town, Eskom said that the tariff hikes were necessary as, due to various factors, the tariff was increased at below inflation for the past two years.

The power utility also said that the 15% tariff increase that it is asking for is still not enough to cover all its debts.

NERSA hearings on Eskom applications in Northern Cape and Limpopo cancelled

Meanwhile, NERSA announced that public hearing scheduled to take place in Kimberley and Polokwane on 21 and 31 January 2019 respectively, have been cancelled.

"The public hearings have been cancelled due to the low public interest to present at the hearings," it added.

"Public hearings in other provinces will continue as scheduled."
