New Tourism Manager Appointed in George Municipality

George Municipality is pleased to announce the appointment of Joan Shaw as Tourism Manager as of April 2017. Ms Shaw said today that she is thrilled to be back at George Tourism and positive that she can make a tangible difference to how and where George is marketed.

“A strong marketing strategy will allow us to ensure visitor growth within the relevant markets as well as the attraction of new markets to George. The marketing sphere has changed dramatically since the advent of the internet and social media, offering a multitude of new and cost-effective ways to market a destination, that can also be measured very accurately, allowing us to target niche visitors from lucrative markets.”

George Tourism will focus on a tourism development framework, that will support tourism investment and development in the area and incorporating the tourism offices located in Pacaltsdorp, Uniondale, Thembalethu and Wilderness. “I have been encouraged by the genuine interest shown by everyone I have met within the industry lately, in improving George's Tourism landscape, as well as the opportunity I have been given to have input into forward planning, including budgets”, said Ms Shaw.

There are a number of issues including selling of items at the tourism offices, new marketing collateral and the website that need to addressed and discussions will take place  about new and innovative ways to grow, not only established tourism business in George , but to stimulate community tourism and development in the various outlying areas as well.

Ms Shaw strongly emphasised the necessity of buy-in of all tourism stakeholders to take George Tourism back to the strong entity it was a few years ago, where it positively competed with the neighbouring towns in the domestic and international markets.

“We will certainly be giving exposure to all the major and niche attractions of George, not only on the website, but on all of our marketing platforms, both collectively and separately, where appropriate,” said Ms Shaw.
