New Toyota Fortuner unmasked

Undisguised images of the all-new second generation Toyota Fortuner has been leaked by a Thai-based motoring forum ahead of its official launch later this week.

Repeatedly the best-selling SUV in South Africa since its launch 10-year ago, the newcomer foregoes the current model’s conservative looks in favour of the same sharp-edged styling first on the recently unveiled Lexus NX.

Appearing to have grown in size over its predecessor, the new Fortuner also gains a completely redesigned interior, seemingly inspired by that of the Prado, and a revised range of standard equipment.

As before, the Fortuner will use the same underpinnings as the recently launched Toyota Hilux as well as the same range of GD-range turbodiesel engines in a form of a 2.4, that produces 120 kW and 343 N.m of torque (400 N.m with the new six-speed auto box), and 2.8-litre that churns out 130 kW and 420 N.m of torque, which increases to 450 N.m when connected to the auto box.

A revised version of the current 4.0-litre V6 is expected to be the sole petrol option while the 2.7 is unlikely to be available despite being allocated for other markets.

More details are expected to emerge later this week.
