Police in Stutterheim have opened an investigation after a newly-born baby boy was found over the weekend dumped in the backyard of a house at Vries Street in Stutterheim.

It is alleged that on Saturday afternoon the house occupants heard a crying baby and went to investigate.

“They found the baby boy next to the yard and alerted the police,” said police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa.

She added that the baby was taken by an ambulance to hospital where he is being kept.

A case of child abandonment has been registered at the Stutterheim SAPS.

“Preliminary investigation was done by police to no success. A police investigation is continuing so that we can track down the mother of the child,” added Captain Mawisa.

Police have since urged anyone, who might have information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Stutterheim SAPS on 043 683 1996.
