Ngqamakhwe man jailed for life for raping, robbing and killing two women

Justice was finally served when Mthatha High Court on Monday sentenced a 33-year-old Ngqamakhwe man, Sthembele Ganda, to life imprisonment for brutally raping, robbing and murdering two women nearly five years ago.

"It is alleged that the accused person raped two women - namely Liziwe Tom (24) and Qukezwa Tom (77)," said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"He later murdered them and robbed them of their cellphones.

"He also tried to murder a child and then hid her at the back of their home."

Captain Manatha said that the crimes were committed on 24 May 2012, during the night, at Miya Location, Zolo Village, Ngqamakhwe.

"The motive for the crimes was robbery. The accused was under the impression that the deceased people had money as he saw them coming from a local shop," he described.

"The cellphones of the deceased were found on the deceased."

Ganda was convicted and sentenced as follows;

  • housebreaking - he was sentenced to undergo five imprisonment;
  • attempted murder - eight years imprisonment;
  • robbery - 10 years imprisonment,
  • two murders - 42 years imprisonment; and
  • rape - life imprisonment.

"The sentences of housebreaking to murders will run concurrently with rape sentence of life imprisonment," said Captain Manatha.
