NMB reveals logo for Ironman 70.3 World Championships

The new logo for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships that will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay in September 2018 was revealed at a press briefing at City Hall on Thursday afternoon by Executive Mayor Athol Trollip and the Vice President of Ironman World Champion Events, Diana Birch.

After the announcement last year that the Ironman 70.3 World Championships would be held in Nelson Mandela Bay, the city has been hustling and bustling to make the necessary preparations and secure funding for this world class spectacle.

“It was a unique experience for myself and the mayoral committee to be invited to an event where some very smart advertising agencies in the city came together to make a presentation to us to consider their concepts for a logo for this incredible event,” said Trollip.

The three advertising agencies involved, who volunteered to create the Ironman 70.3 logo for the city were Boomtown, Simon Says and Strategy.

“The ultimate choice wasn’t exactly what we had decided on, but it was pretty much a hybrid of all three presentations and very close to what we thought was the best logo,”

When given the opportunity to design an Ironman logo, the ‘M’ of Ironman can take a character of the host nation to be presented to the rest of the world.

“We have had significant discussions with the Ironman organisers about showcasing this whole city to all the athletes, but also to expose the whole city and as many people as possible in this city to the athletes and the competition,” said Trollip.

"I had the opportunity to meet with the city management on Tuesday and it reinforced our partnership. This enables us to host a fabulous event that will showcase the highest standard Nelson Mandela Bay has to offer,” said Diana Birch.

A number of qualifying slots are still available for September, 316 athletes from the United States of America, 119 from Great Britain, 118 from Germany and many more from 66 other countries.
