NMMU suspends lectures following veld fire - fire brought under control

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) on Wednesday morning said that it has cancelled lectures at its North, South and Ocean Sciences campuses (old CSIR campuses) following a veld fire that broke out on Tuesday night.

"The massive fire saw the evacuation of dozens of students staying at Sanlam Student Village late last night, and large tracts of bushveld destroyed on the University’s South and North campuses," the university said.

"Though the fire is largely under control, a decision was made cancel lectures to allow for the heavy smoke to dissipate and for fire fighters monitor the situation.

"A decision regarding the resumption of lectures this afternoon, and other matters impacted by the fire, will be shared later this morning."

The NMMU said that the fire is believed to have started deep into the 720-hectare nature reserve at about 8pm last night.

"It was briefly brought under control by fire fighters, only to flare up at about midnight last night."
