Not UFO - Halo spotted around sun in KZN, Eastern Cape explained

The South African Weather Service on Monday said that it received a lot of questions as to why there is a ring around the sun spotted over the KwaZulu Natal and Eastern parts of the Eastern Cape.

"This phenomena is called a Halo, which is produced by the refraction of light by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere," the weather office explained.

Halo around sun phenomena explained

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the halo phenomena is a group of optical phenomena in the form of rings, arcs, pillars or bright spots, produced by the refraction or reflection of light by ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere (cirriform clouds, diamond dust, etc.).

"Halo types formed by refraction of sunlight may show colours, whereas reflection haloes are white. At night, it is difficult for the human eye to perceive colour; therefore, lunar haloes mostly appear white," it added.
