Police in Port Elizabeth have appealed to the community to assist in removing illegal firearms from society after yet another person was found killed in the streets - this time at Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth.

"This followed after the body of the 42-year-old Ludwe Papu was found in Kani Street, Veeplaas, on Friday, at 20:45," said police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge.

"Papu was found with fatal gun shot wounds to his head.

"He was a security guard that was off-duty when the incident happened."

Capt Beetge said that a case of murder was opened at Kwazakele SAPS and is being investigated by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation team.

"Any person with information that could assist police in this investigation can contact Lieutenant Colonel Willie Mayi at 082 697 5914."

Port Elizabeth police concerned by spike in murders

Meanwhile, Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie, said; "SAPS is making a call on our community to report illegal fire arms and to give information of suspects committing crimes involving firearms.

General Rabie has also expressed his concerns about the sudden spike of murders committed with firearms in the past week.

"We (the SAPS) will work round the clock to get the perpetrators in these recent murders, but our community must break the silence and come forward with the identities of the suspects as well as the whereabouts of illegal firearms, in order to assist police to bring back safety and security in the communities of the affected areas," he added.

"We need to arrest these perpetrators and get them as well as their fire arms off our streets and before court."
