One arrested after Despatch police swiftly respond to armed business robbery

Determination and commitment towards their vocation paid off on Thursday, when members from SAPS Despatch acted swiftly after receiving a complaint of a business robbery in progress at 14:10 in Tobile Busakwe Street, Khayamnandi, Despatch.

"Upon arrival at the scene, the members noticed three suspects running away from the business and gave chase. The three suspects ran towards Khozi Street, where the suspects ran into different directions," described police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart.

"Members saw the one suspect running towards a house and followed him. The police officials noticed the suspect fell to the ground and dropping something in the grass.

"Members found a 7.65 hidden in the grass and arrested the 32-year-old male suspect and confiscated the firearm."

She said that the officers also recovered a substantial amount of cash and a cellphone that was  found in his possession.  

"It is alleged that three armed suspects robbed the business and took an undisclosed amount of cash, a cellphone and fled from the scene on foot. 

"Police officials, who were in the vicinity acted swiftly and swooped on the one suspect," added Capt Swart.

"The search for the outstanding two suspects are ongoing and more arrests are  imminent."

She said that the suspect is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon, on charges ranging from robbery at a business premises and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

"The firearm will be send for forensic tests to determine whether it was used in the commission of other crimes."

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Laurence Soekoe, commended the officers for their concerted efforts and vigilance in ensuring that they bring those culprits who commit serious crimes in the Uitenhage Cluster are brought to book.

Investigations are continuing.
