Over R300 000 up for grabs at third 1City Relay and Marathon this Sunday

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, on Friday announced a partnership that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has entered with race organisers to give away a generous R350 500 to the top athlete this Sunday at the third 1City Relay and Marathon.

Charmaine Williams, who is Director of Sports and Recreation in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, said that the Metro enjoys a good relationship with Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) and is supporting a team from Motherwell, Port Elizabeth.

"The relationship consists of seven races spread across all the metropolitan areas including Uitenhage, Motherwell, Northern Areas and the Ibhayi area," she described.

She added that the Metro has a three-year partnership agreement with EPA top grow local athletes and it has been a fruitful partnership.

"We have witnessed how they have benefited from this and how the rankings have improved. The development of sport is what we want to achieve," Williams said.

Enter 1City Relay and Marathon for good health

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, said the city has invested over R1 million into social sports.

"There's a lot happening in the city and we have R1.1 million that has been invested into sports by the Municipality," Bobani described.

"For your health, we are encouraging everyone to participate in this 42km run."

According to Bobani, there are 500 participants expected at this year’s 1City Relay and Marathon – more than double the 200 that participated at the 2017 1City Relay and Marathon .

He said that the Metro, hopes to increase the number to a thousand participants next year.

The winners of the 1City Relay and Marathon will qualify for the 2 Oceans Marathon.

Irene Van Oden, who is the Eastern Province Athletics director, said that they were encouraged because the number of women participating in the marathon has also doubled.

She added that the athletes don't pay for their entering the 1City Relay and Marathon.
