Overnight Port Elizabeth crime blitz nets suspects wanted for serious crimes

Police in the Mount Road SAPS cluster in Port Elizabeth are working in earnest to ensure that all wanted criminals are arrested and behind bars this festive season.

"In the last 12 hours, a total of 42 suspects were arrested for various serious and violent crimes," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"On Thursday, Detective members from all seven stations worked from 22:00 until 06:00 on Friday morning, hunting their suspects wanted on reported cases."

She said that the suspects arrested were detained on crimes among others ranging from murder, attempted murder, house robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and arson.

"On Thursday, at about 17:45, Walmer police members were patrolling Daniel Street, in Walmer, when they noticed an unknown male standing at the gate," Col Naidu added.

"When he saw the police, he ran back into the shack. The members then chased after him and saw the suspect throwing a firearm on the bed.

"He was arrested and detained for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition."

She said that the 27-year-old suspect will appear in court on Tuesday.

"Six suspects were also arrested for alleged rape in separate cases committed in Algoa Park, Gelvandale and Kabega Park during October and November this year."

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, has re-iterated that the men and women in blue will be hard at work this festive season to ensure the safety of our citizens.

"Our members will be out in their numbers day and night upholding their commitment to serve and protect their communities and in so doing, we will adopt a zero tolerance approach to criminality. At the same time, I urge the communities to enjoy the festive season in a responsible manner," added Maj Gen Patekile.
