Overstrand Municipality convenes meeting over Zwelihle housing needs

May 16, 2018

The Overstrand Municipality on Tuesday evening convened a meeting as a follow-up to report on progress regarding housing and land in the area.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, in conjunction with the Overstrand Municipality, and National Department of Human Settlements.

"This is a tripartite arrangement, in order to bring lasting solution to the problems confronting us relating to housing and land shortage," said Acting Overstrand Municipality Executive Mayor, Elnora Gillion.

Present at the meeting were the Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament, Masizole Mnqasela, and Cameron Dugmore, Gillion; the Overberg District Municipality's Archie Klaas; housing MMC, Arnie Africa, together with Overstrand Municipal Councillors and senior officials of the three spheres of government, including those who are resident in Zwelihle, and apparently elected to represent the Zwelihle community.

"Among those in attendance, were the committee representatives of the community of Zwelihle, who were part of the original meeting held on the 27th of March, 2018, subsequent to the violent protest that erupted in that area," the Mayor said.

"The meeting summarily adjourned, due to the infighting and divisions among the community representatives.

"We tried to reason with them, but subsequently resolved to let them go back to the community to address their in-house issues.

"We further resolved to convene a community public meeting for Sunday, the 27th of May at 14:00, to get the mandate from the community on who should be representing them as we go ahead with the deliberations surrounding Human Settlements."

Gillion said that they will deliver housing opportunities as far as we can for all communities, "and ensure that we embrace all people, across all groupings, regardless of race".

"We hope for a peaceful resolution on this impasse facing the community."
