PE Irish dancers win big

Several dancers from the McWilliams Academy of Dance studio in Port Elizabeth, took part in their first Irish Dancing Competition of the year in Cape Town.

Four of the juniors won trophies for their ‘reel’ (a high-energy soft shoe dance) and the studio amassed a total of 18 gold and 11 silver medals.

An Irish Dancing competition is called a ‘Feis’. There are a number of competitions throughout South Africa and the students of McWilliams Academy attend as many as they can afford to.

“This first one we attended was called Edgemead Feis in Cape Town and our juniors in particular were ecstatic about their trophies. There were five up for grabs and our girls won four of them,” said Vanessa Forbes of the McWilliams Academy of Dance.

“Every competition takes us one step further in our ultimate goal; to do well at SA Champs! Every ribbon, medal and trophy motivates and inspires the girls to do their best and to never stop believing in themselves.”

The next competition they will be attending is Nelson Mandela Bay’s very own ‘Feis on the Bay’ during April. They will then be travelling to Cape Town again in May for the Cape Town Championships.

The studios senior dancer, Courtney Pearce, will be taking part in the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in a few days.
