PE police appeal for leads after off-duty officer injured in fatal gang shooting

The Provincial Gang Investigation Unit has appealed to the public to assist them in reporting criminals involved in shooting incidents in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas.

The appeal comes after two people were killed and three others injured in a shooting incident, which took place on Thursday night in Windvogel in Port Elizabeth.

"It is alleged that at about 21:00 last night, a group of males were standing talking and drinking in 2nd Street in Windvogel when a white LDV bakkie approached them," said police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"According to police information, the vehicle stopped next to the group, the passenger alighted and started firing at them. David Kokora (26), a Dustlife gang member and Aartjie Kok (23) were fatally wounded while three other persons, aged 23, 29 and 39 sustained injuries.

"Among the injured was an off duty policeman. The suspect is unknown and police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder."

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Major General Funeka Siganga is urging the communities in the Northern areas not to keep quiet and to work with the police in eradicating violent crimes that are plaguing the communities.

"The community are the ‘eyes and ears’ of the police and every information that is given to us will be investigated," added Major General Siganga.

Anyone who can assist police in their investigation is asked to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Mike Grobler on 082 442 1825 or to the nearest police station or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. All information supplied is strictly confidential and the caller may remain anonymous if he/she so desires.
