Peddie learner fatally stabbed another learner at school 'by mistake'

The South African Police Service has strongly condemned the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old Grade 7 learner at Mpeko Primary School in Peddie on Thursday.
"It is alleged that at about 09:00 in the morning, two boys were playing in the school premises and the suspect, 15-years-old, was in possession of a knife," said police spokesprson, Colonel Sibongile Soci.

"While they were playing, the suspect stabbed the deceased in the upper body.

"He was immediately taken to the nearby clinic for medical attention where he was certified dead on arrival."

Col Soci said that the circumstances surrounding the incident will form part of a police investigation.
"The 15-year-old has been arrested and is being processed in terms of the Child Justice Act."
Acting Eastern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Maj Gen André Swart, condemned the senseless murder of the Grade 7 learner.

“SAPS members will continue to operationalize the implementation of protocol entered into between SAPS and the Department of Basic Education to ensure that Safer Schools Program is strengthened and visits and random searches are now intensified even to primary schools," he said.
