Petrol price decreases by 20c per litre on Wednesday

The Department of Energy over the weekend confirmed that the price of petrol will drop by 20 cents a litre on Wednesday. This applies to all grades of petrol.

Diesel prices will drop by between 31c/l and 32c/l depending on the sulphur content.

The price of illuminating paraffin will drop by between 28 cents and 38 cents per litre on the same day while the retail price for LP gas will decrease by 17 cents per kilogram.

In its explanation, the Department of Energy said; “The Rand appreciated against the US Dollar during the period under review‚ on average‚ when compared to the previous period."

It further said that the average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate for the period 28 October 2016 to 01 December 2016 was 13.9125 compared to 13.9646 during the previous period. There was also a decrease in the prices of crude oil during the period under review.

"This led to decreases in the contribution to the Basic Fuels Price on petrol‚ diesel and illuminating paraffin by 2.02 c/l‚ 1.96 c/l and 1.96 c/l respectively."
