Phicor delivers a revamped dormitory to SAPS Training College at Graaff-Reinet

When the South African Police Service (SAPS) needed a facelift for the Morning Star Dormitory at their Training College, which is based in the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet, Port Elizabeth-based Phicor Architectural Products was appointed by the main contractor.

The project at Graaff-Reinet was a total revamp. The building was demolished with only the superstructure left.

Phicors scope of work was to offer a full design package with custom manufactured louvre systems, Curtain wall installations and purpose manufactured windows to accommodate the client.

All the products had been manufactured in house with careful planning for the installation process.

The project kicked off in May 2015, with a 14-month repair period. The original completion date was 25 July 2016, but as a result of scope change extension of time was awarded to the contractor with a revised completion date of 20 January 2017.

The total project value was R61 million. Part of this money was also spent in the local economy through job creation and opportunities for local service providers.

5% of the contract value had to be paid toward local workers and 25% of the value to local suppliers. Additional to this, 32 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) learners were employed.
