Police appeal for leads after elderly Port Elizabeth woman robbed in her home

The elderly woman only managed to get help about eight hours later

Port Elizabeth - Police in Port Elizabeth on Thursday warned that they take attacks against a senior citizens seriously and called on the community to assist with information in an alleged house robbery where a 78-year-old woman was tied up and robbed.

"It is alleged that on Thursday, at approximately 00:30, the elderly woman was watching TV in her house in Bernard Street, Lovemore Heights," described police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"She dozed off in the lounge and woke up after hearing a noise. Six suspects entered her home."

Capt Janse Van Rensburg said that two suspects stayed with the woman in the lounge while the other four suspects ransacked the house.

"The two suspects threatened the woman with a knife, demanding information with regard to the safe. There was no safe in the house and the suspects tied her up," she added.

"After the suspects left the house, she managed to crawl to the kitchen and then outside in an attempt to get help.

"However, it was only after 08:00 on Thursday morning that a gardener working in the complex heard her cry for help and came to her assistance."

Capt Janse Van Rensburg said that the suspects fled with a TV, hi-fi set ,a DVD player, jewellery and a bag with personal belongings of the complainant.

"The Mount Road Cluster Trio Task team is calling on the community to assist them with any information that can lead to the arrest of suspects involved in this robbery to contact Capt Chris Rowan on 082 442 1457."
