Police appeal for leads after hitman kills jikeleza passenger in Kwanobuhle

Police in Uitenhage on Wednesday appealed to the public for assistance with information that can help them solve a point-blank shooting incident that claimed a life of a jikeleza (local) taxi passenger in Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage, on Tuesday.

"On Tuesday, at around 7pm, it is alleged that a green Mazda hatchback operating as a jikeleza taxi had several passengers inside," described police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.

"The driver stopped at Lawrence Vinqi Road, Kwanobuhle, to let one of the passengers out of the vehicle.

"That was when a blue Volkswagen Polo pulled in front of them."

Sgt Nkohli said that an unknown man, armed with a firearm, got out of the Polo and walked towards a jikeleza taxi.

He said that the suspect opened fire and killed one of the passengers that was sitting at the back next to the window.

"The suspect then got back into the Polo and drove off. The deceased, Mamiya Ntshanyana (20), died at the scene," Sgt Nkohli said.

"At this stage, the motive for the murder is unknown, and the police are investigating all possibilities.

"Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Gcinikhaya Ntliziywana at 041 978 8800 or 071 475 2330."
