Police appeal for leads following brazen early morning robbery in Ngcobo

Eastern Cape police on Monday appealed to the public for leads as they launched a massive manhunt for a group of armed robbers that allegedly robbed a bank in Ngcobo and opened fire on officers in a daring robbery early on Monday morning.

According to the police, it is alleged that the heavily armed robbers gained access to an undisclosed amount of money after cutting open ATM machines with angle grinders. The gang had subdued a security guard at the ATMs.

Astonishingly, the robbers took up positions all over the small town and when police responded to the robbery, they opened fire resulting in one constable being wounded during the fire fight. He has been taken to hospital.

Police further allege that the robbers had also kept the local police station and the homes of police officers under surveillance. When the shootout, the gang members also started firing at the station and at the officers' homes.

When the local police managed to call in reinforcements from Public Order Policing, National Intervention Unit and Organised Crime detectives, the robbers had fled in four vehicles - an Audi, BMW, Fortuner, and a Toyota Hilux.

Police are now investigating a case of business robbery, attempted murder and malicious damaged to property.

They are yet to arrest any one.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga said that the SAPS is working to bring the suspects to book, adding; "We will not rest until they are behind bars. I have sanctioned additional resources to a special team, which will hunt them down.

"I appeal to anyone who might have seen what happened or know anything about the whereabouts of these perpetrators to call their nearest station or crime stop on 08600 10111 or Crime Line 32211."
