In an attempt to enforce the law, police and Eastern Cape Liquor Board officials inspected the alleged problematic tarvens in the Mdantsane and East London Clusters respectively over the weekend.

"This follows after the Eastern Cape Liquor Board office received complaints about the non-compliance of these tarvens with their liquor license conditions from members of the public," said police spokesperson, Captain Nkosikho Mzuku.

"It is alleged that this non-compliance is rife over the weekend, hence the operation was carried out on Saturday night."

He said that thorough inspection was conducted at Juice tarven in NU7, Mdantsane, where the owner was warned for loud music.

"They proceeded to Ekoneni pub in NU2, the owner was warned for loud music and allowing people to drink in public. They went on to Mamiya tarven in NU1, the owner was warned for loud music," said Capt Mzuku.

"They continued with visibility towards East London Cluster and visited VE Africanite tavern in Oxford. The owner was issued with R1 000 fine for liquor bylaw contrary to closing times. The owner was ordered to close.

"They proceeded to Ndosi tavern in Southernwood, the patrons were removed from the tarven since the manager ran away. The tavern was ordered to close."
