Police boss comments on cop who shot and killed wife at Voorpos Primary School

The Provincial SAPS Commissioner of the Eastern Cape Province, Lieutenant General LE Ntshinga, says that she has learned with shock about the shooting incident, where it is alleged that a police Constable shot and killed his wife at Voorpos Primary School on Friday.

“We condemn this incident in the strongest sense and with the contempt it deserves. This act can never be condoned within the SAPS family and within the general community,” she emphasized.

According to police spokesperson, Capt Khaya Tonjeni, the police were alerted on Friday morning, at about. 11:00, that a 44-year-old Constable stationed at Kidd’s Beach and attached to the Visible Policing Unit had gone to the Voorpos Primary School, in Cambridge, East London, where he shot and fatally wounded his wife.

“He was arrested on the scene. The next of kin has been informed and debriefing assistance is being rendered to those involved,” he said.

“The motive of the killing is unknown and a case of murder has been registered for further investigation by IPID. The circumstances surrounding this incident will also be investigated.”

Lt Gen Ntshinga said: "We wish to convey our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, friends and colleagues. We wish to encourage our members to utilize the services of our specialists in the office of EHW (Employee Health and Wellness Section) for professional guidance and interventions when the need arise.

“It is of utmost importance that our members consult with family members, colleagues, their local churches or parents if they are experiencing any challenges or seeking assistance in their personal life.”

Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mandla Makupula, said that he is saddened by the passing on of the woman, who was a Voorpos Primary School Governing Body member.
