Police investigating inquest docket after Rocklands man dies in house fire

Port Elizabeth - Police in Port Elizabeth have opened an inquest docket after an elderly man burnt to death in his house in Rocklands over the weekend.

"It is alleged that on Sunday, at about 03:35, a security vehicle was patrolling in Culturama Street, Rocklands, when he noticed a house on fire and immediately alerted the Fire Department and the South African Police Service," described police spokesperson, Capt Sandra Janse Van Rensburg.

"According to the security guard, a part of the house was already burnt out prior to his arrival."

Local resident, Johan Potgieter, aged 74, stayed alone at the house.

"After the fire was extinguished, the body of Potgieter was found in the kitchen," she added.

"At this stage no foul play is expected and the cause of the fire still needs to be investigated.

"An inquest is currently under investigation."
