The SAPS’ endeavours to crack down on illegal firearms continues to yield results.

Members of the Visible Gang Intervention Team in Mount Road confiscated two firearms in two days while performing duties in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth.

"On Tuesday, at about 14:00, the members responded to a shooting in Stag Street in Gelvandale," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"As they were chasing the suspect, he tossed the firearm in the back yard of one of the houses.

"A revolver was found and confiscated."

She said that on Wednesday, at about 16:30, the members were searching the premises of a known gang affiliate in Denson Street, Gelvandale, when they found a firearm under a paint can in the backyard.

"No one was at home at the time."

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, has vowed to continue with high density visibility of police officers on foot and in vehicles in these hotspot areas.

"We will be working closely with members of the community and through this partnership we will flush out the criminals," added Maj Gen Patekile.
