Port Elizabeth K9 Unit confiscate replica firearms and ammo

Replica guns or toy guns can look incredibly real and are often used in the commission of serious crimes such as robberies, Port Elizabeth police said.

"It is alleged that on Tuesday, at about 00:15, members of Port Elizabeth Flying Squad followed up on information of suspects at a shack in Missionvale in possession of drugs and firearms," said police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"As the members approached the shacks in Trom Road Missionvale, the suspects saw them from a distance and fled into the nearby bushes.

"On searching the shack, the members confiscated three replica firearms with magazines, one home-made zip gun with a firing pin, four live 9mm rounds and nine mandrax tablets."

She said no arrests were made.

Mount Road SAPS Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, has commended the members on swiftly following up on the information.

"Even though these are replica firearms, we know that criminals are using them to commit crimes. We thank the community for providing us with information of the suspects and their activities and we urge them to continue to do so," added Maj Gen Patekile.
