Port Elizabeth - Star police dog, Max, again assisted Port Elizabeth police in the arrest of two alleged cable thieves in Bethelsdorp on Tuesday afternoon.

"It is alleged that at about 16:30, the PE K9 Unit received information from Nelson Mandela Bay security of an ongoing problem of cable theft in the metro for the past two weeks," described police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu.

"The suspects stole cable to the value of R300 000 in Rensburg Street in Bethelsdorp.

"The area is surrounded by houses and dense bushes."

Col Naidu said that an operation was planned with the SAPS Airwing being roped in to assist. Sgt Adriaan Oosthuizen and his dog, Max, were in the police helicopter while his colleagues were combing the bushes on foot.

"The suspects were busy digging a trench when they spotted the police helicopter and started to run," she described.

"Sgt Oosthuizen and Max were dropped off and immediately Max apprehended the first suspect.

"The second suspect was apprehended again by Max within minutes of the first arrest."

Both suspects, aged 20 and 30 years old, were detained for theft of cables and are expected to appear in court soon.
