Port Elizabeth police foil smuggling of R2.5 million worth of booze at Coega

Police in Port Elizabeth have launched investigations after over 150 large drums with liquor were found at the deepwater Port of Ngqura, adjacent to the Coega IDZ, just outside Port Elizabeth, on Thursday. 

According to police spokesperson, Constable Mncedi Mbombo, the druns are believed to have been in the process on being illegally smuggled to Saudi Arabia.

"The anti-smuggling team of the border police responded to a tip-off about a container filled with alcohol," he described.

"They found some 180 twenty-litre drums in the container, with more than half of them containing liquor."

Constable Mbombo said that the estimated value of the liquor is about R2.5 million, however, noone has yet been arrested.

Police are now investigating a case of fraud and illegal sale of liquor.
