Port Elizabeth police have appealed to local residents to come forward with information after a movie-style gang-related drive-by shooting incident on a city highway.

"It is alleged that on Tuesday, at about 09:30, occupants travelling in a Nissan open bakkie were shot at on the M4 Port Elizabeth bound," said police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

"Two occupants, aged 19 and 25 years old, who were seated at the back of the bakkie were injured. The female was shot in her left leg and the male in his left arm and left foot."

According to Colonel Naidu, the bakkie was travelling in the middle lane when the gunmen approached on the fast lane and opened fire.

"The injured were taken to hospital for treatment. Police are investigating two counts of attempted murder."

In another incident, at about 10:00, on Tuesday, a 33 year-old man was fatally wounded while another person was injured in a shooting incident on the Kleinskool Main Road.

"It is alleged that the suspects shot at the complainant’s vehicle from a taxi," Colonel Naidu said.

"The complainant drove his VW Golf to SAPS Algoa Park and reported the incident.

"He sustained two gunshot wounds (one in his back and one in his hand). He was taken to hospital for treatment."

Police are again investigating a case of murder and attempted murder and in both incidents, no suspects have been arrested.

Colonel Naidu said that police are appealing to the communities in the Northern Areas to come forward and report these criminals, who are continuing to disrupt peace in the lives of law abiding citizens.
