Port Elizabeth’s own geek convention is taking over Baywest Mall this year

In preparation for their convention taking place in September, cosplayers and volunteers from Nelson Mandela University (NMU) descended on the Baywest Mall on Saturday to promote the Con.ect 2017 convention that will be taking place at the mall.

Con.ect is an event aimed at finding Port Elizabeth's fellow gamers, cosplayers and fandom lovers and bringing those people together, giving them a place to share passions and interests with fellow fans. The event will be concentrating on the main subjects of Gaming and Cosplay.

“Con.ect 2017 is set to be the biggest yet, hosted by Baywest Mall. There will be geek merch stalls from across the country to satisfy any fandom lover.  Expect to see amazing cosplay, dinosaurs, martial arts displays, live tabletop gaming and so much more,” event organiser, Janelle Vermaak, told RNEWS.

Locals who went to Baywest Mall on Saturday had the chance to see cosplayers dressed as characters from movies, comic books, games and anime, such as the Green Lantern, Spiderman, Lucy Heartfilia from the Fairy Tail anime, Katana of the Suicide Squad and Assassins Creed.

"Since Con.ect 2016 that took place at NMMU, we have had really good exposure for what we are and what we do, that is the cosplay, the gaming, and the culture. We have partnered with Baywest Mall to further promote the idea of a convention, a comic con in Port Elizabeth," said Alex Karantges, member of the promotion and organising team for Con.ect.

"We have definately upped our game from last year. On my side I am really wowed about the community growth, the locals seem to be getting the hang of it and getting with the vibe and I think that's very good, because community always makes everything better and progresses things," said Alex.

The Con.ect team will be hosting promotions every Saturday until the convention which will be taking place on the 2nd and 3rd of September inside Baywest Mall.

"We are hoping for a very positive and lively convention this year inside of the mall."

Tickets are available from webtickets, R50 for one day, and R80 for a weekend pass. LAN gaming will also be taking place at the convention, tickets for this weekend pass are R200.

There are only 50 tickets available for the LAN gaming, which is being hosted by Sector 17 eSports, more info regarding the LAN will be provided closer to the event.
