Port Elizabeth woman stabbed to death by son on Mother's Day

Port Elizabeth police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and an inquest after a Port Elizabeth allegedly killed his 78-year-old mother on Sunday.

The Cotswold woman and her 57-year-old daughter were found lying outside a house in Kanarie Street.

According to police information at about 20:30, Barbara Jane Sturdy’s daughter, Sandra June Coetzee (57) had arrived at the house to drop off her mother.

"It is alleged that an altercation broke out between Barbara Sturdy and her son, Maurice Pirzenthal (49) while they were still outside the house," described police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

Sturdy and Coetzee were both stabbed in the neck.

"Sturdy succumbed to her injury at the scene while Coetzee was taken to hospital for treatment."

Col Naidu said that Pirzenthal was found dead in his car in the garage.

"It is believed that he had gassed himself in the car."

Police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and an inquest.
