Power outages unfortunate - George Municipality

The George Municipality on Tuesday apologized to local residents and businesses for power outages that have affected the area surrounding York High School over the past two weeks.

"Unfortunately private contractors working in the area damaged cables which caused two major power outages," the municipality said.

Steyn van der Merwe, Deputy Director: Electrotechnical Services, said the matter has been addressed with the contractors and that another coordination meeting between the directorate and the contractors was held on Monday.

It said that during this meeting, it was decided that a kick-off site-meeting would be held before the start of every section. The contractor that identifies existing services will contact the responsible person from the relevant directorates to join them when identifying these services.

The municipality said that "It must be emphasised that there are currently two completely different main contractors that are busy with two separate jobs. There are various sub-contractors that work for each main contractor.

"The first outage occurred on the 11th of May 2018 at 10:15 and power was restored at 11:41. Damage reoccurred during the rest of the week on the same cables and in some instances before the power supply could be restored. George Municipality apologizes for any inconvenience."
