Premier launches Maritime Youth Development Programme in East London

Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masualle, on Friday officially launched the Maritime Youth Development Programme in the East London Harbour.

The event was to showcase the partnership that the Office of the Premier has with the South African Maritime Safety Authority and other partners in youth development.

According to the Office of the Premier, 150 youth have been selected in Port St Johns and Buffalo City Municipality and put into a training programme.

"After the training, those that are successful will be eligible for placement on various cruiseliners and other related industry job opportunities.

"The candidates are currently being trained on various facets of the industry which include but not limited to Fire Fighting and First Aid," it said.

"Due to the geographic location of the province, the Maritime industry posses a huge economic development potential for the Eastern Cape. This is part of the broader youth empowerment programme of the province, and it is also linked to the Provincial Development Plan and Operation Pakisa."
