Premier welcomes SAB's new R438-million Ibhayi Brewery production line

While unveiling its brand new R438-million production line at its Ibhayi Brewery, which is based in Perseverance, Port Elizabeth, on Thursday, SAB and AB InBev Africa, said that they hope the investment will create new jobs locally.

Addressing delegates at the official launch, Director of Breweries at SAB, Thuthuka Nxumalo, said that in October this year, the new 6000m2 packaging line went online and produced its very first batch of beer.

He said that the construction of the new line began in March and took seven months to complete.

Nxumalo added that the new packaging line adds annual capacity of 1.8 million hectolitres to Ibhayi Brewery's annual brewing capacity.

Types of beer to be brewed at the brewery

According to Nxumalo, when the production line is fully operational, the Ibhayi Brewery will be able to produce the new Castle Lager and Carling Black Label 1-litre returnable glass bottles.

However, in 2019, they aim to begin producing Castle Lite's 910ml returnable glass bottle.

Due to the high volumes to be produced, SAB has also increased the warehouse space by 2000m2 in order to accommodate the new line.

Job creation for locals

Nxumalo said that since the new line was introduced a month ago, the Ibhayi Brewery has already hired around 14 people - most of them women.

"We are extremely proud of this and another 40 people are expected to be employed when the line eventually operates at its full capacity," he added.

Eastern Cape, Phumulo Masualle, who was at the unveiling, welcomed the investment by SAB and AB InBev.

He acknowledged the plant is a "handy initiative that will create more jobs so that we can sustain the lives of our people”.

"The president is leading a campaign in which he is asking corporates all over the globe to partner with the government in making sure that we develop our economy and we can ensure that we address all the challenges that we face," he added.
