PRESSURE POINTS: JC Acupressure uses pain against itself

As I suffer from recurrent pains in my body, I was recently excited when I discovered that you no longer need to travel to the Far East for one of the world’s oldest and most natural ways of healing and stress relief - acupressure. This 5,000-year old treatment technique is now offered right here, in the Bay, by Jeff Chen, owner of JC Acupressure Massage.

On my first visit, Jeff and I discussed my frequent body discomforts – especially in my shoulders and back, before he came up with a health diagnosis. He then proceeded to treat the problem areas that he had identified as needing relief - some of which I was not even aware of.

This he did by gently, but firmly, kneading the same pressure points and meridians that are used in acupuncture to stimulate my body’s natural self-curative abilities. Unlike acupuncture, he used his fingers and palms to stimulate these pressure points, which was a big plus for me since I dread needles.

When the points are stimulated, they release muscular tension, promote the circulation of blood and enhance the body’s life force energy to aid healing. The most important of these points are located along either side of the spine and on the upper back.

Unlike other therapies, acupressure does not require you to remove your clothing for the treatment.

Jeff explained that, through acupressure therapy, he is able to assist people suffering from musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory and psychological disorders. Acupressure can be very effective in the prevention and treatment for headaches, colds and flu, arthritis, allergies, asthma, nervous tension, menstrual cramps, sinus problems, sprains, tennis elbow and toothache, amongst others. He is also able to align your spine.

After my third treatment, I now feel more energetic and can feel a noticeable difference in my shoulders where my body usually stores its stress. I can now also quickly relieve myself of pains and tension while at work.

While the initial treatment was 60 minutes long, the follow-up visits were more manageable and between 15 to 50 minutes.
